Summary Academic Interest:

I am a PhD candidate in the Geography Graduate Group under the supervision of Dr. Susan Ustin. Being a broad based student of geography, nearly all areas of my chosen discipline interest me; however, I consider my general areas of specialization to be geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and geographical theory. GIS and remote sensing particularly excite me because they have the potential to monitor and organize social and environmental data in such a way as to better understand their integration and interactions. Understanding in this regard could help solve or contribute to the solution of many environmental and resource management problems facing societies around the world. Reflecting this philosophy, my doctoral dissertation research is concerned with monitoring development, deforestation and habitat fragmentation in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, through the use of geospatial technologies.
