GGG Making the News: May 30 - June 10, 2019

This week, GGG is giving a shoutout the following students and faculty for their accomplishments. Names in bold are UC Davis GGG students and faculty. Names in non-bold are collaborators.

[1] Madeline Weeks was featured in the UC Davis Instagram Stories on May 30th for her research the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of fine flavors of cacao and chocolate.

[2] Clancy McConnell is partnering with Solano County Water Agency to begin his dissertation research on lower Putah Creek (downstream of Berryessa). The project will analyze the historical geography of the creek in order to create a landscape model of dammed Central Valley river systems. The model could be used to create more effective ecological restoration projects on Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Green River' and other rivers across the Central Valley. [Potential GGG 2020 Trivia: Jon Fogerty of CCR, originally from Berkeley, CA, vacationed in his adolescence on Putah Creek near Winters and wrote 'Green River' after Putah Creek. Bullfrogs, catfish, and even rope swings still adorn the iconic waterway.]

[3] Gabi Kirk received: 1) UCHRI Graduate Student Working Group grant for cross-UC Collaboration. The theme of this work is, "Critical Infrastructural Studies: (Im)mobile Landscapes of Militarism, Race, and Settle Colonialism" and 2) a Mellon Research Initiative in Racial Capitalism Graduate Research Fellowship for Summer 2019.

[4] DR. Cory Parker filed his dissertation, "Homeless Negotiations of Public Space in Two California Cities."

[5] Bernie Bastien, Jake Dialesandro, Meghan Klasic, and Clancy McConnell passed their QE Exams.

[6] Amanda Fencl, Kate Munden-Dixon, Victoria Torres, Dr. Cory Andrew Parker, and Dustin Tsai are walking in graduation on Thursday, June 13th at 3:00pm. You can watch them on livestream here.
